Using Google Voice to call other phones is a great way to keep from using up your minutes on your cell phone plan. At least through 2011 you can make free phone calls to any cell phone or landline in the United States.
There are several nice features. One that I really like is that you can set up google voice so that you have your own phone number, complete with voice mail, call screening, call blocking and more. The voicemail's can come into your Gmail account where you can listen to the audio if you like.
Google voice works with your Gmail account, so you must have one of those first.
Google voice can be used on all major operating systems. Including Windows XP+, MAC OSX 10.4+ and Linux. You will also need a microphone and speakers. Often times I use a headset / microphone combination. In order to set up google voice, just go to the google voice page and follow the directions.
After that, just go into your Gmail account, and on the left side under Chat you will see Call Phone. Click that, and you will see the phone pad come up like on the right.
To make a phone call, just type in the number, and click the Call button at the bottom.
If you want your own Google Phone number, just go to the google voice homepage and click Get a number, and follow the directions. Additionally, you can configure this number to forward to your cell phone if you like.
There are so many options that you should be able to customise google voice to suit your needs.
In order to pickup inbound phone calls, you must have your Gmail page open. When a call comes in, you will hear a distinctive sound. If Gmail isn't up, the call will go to your voicemail.
Sometimes when Google Voice is installed, depending on how your computer is set up, sometimes the microphone won't work. Usually this is due to a secondary program such as Skype having configured the mic differently than your gmail account. In Skype, check what name you have for the mic and put it on Gmail. Also go to your control panel, click on Sound and hten recording. There change it to the same one you have on Skype. The point is all of them have to be the same. Also verify the settings in google chat as well.
